MGYSGT Edward L. Butts, Jr (Retired), passed away at St Joseph's Hospital in Syracuse, New York on June 11th, 2018. He was born on April 8th, 1946 and enlisted in the Marine Corps in June 1964 as a Combat Engineer. After 24 years of exemplary service to his country, he retired in February 1988. His decorations include Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medals with Combat V (2 awards), the Navy Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Meritorious Unit Citation Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal (7 awards), National Defense Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Overseas Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, and Unit Cross of Gallantry. His latest honor was being inducted into the New York State Veterans Hall of Fame. Ed served as a vehicle coordinator at the E John Gavras Center after his retirement. He enjoyed his role there as a Mentor to children of all ages. He was an active Member of the Walter T. Conley American Legion Post 1107 and held the offices of Commander, Vice Commander, SGT of Arms, and Chaplain. One of his greatest endeavors was researching all of the local Military men and women and purchasing monuments with all of their names that stand in front of the Legion. These monuments pay tribute to service members who fought for our country dating back to the Civil War through the Persian Gulf War. He was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Gloria Butts along with his nephews, Warren and Michael Solfiell. Ed is survived by his wife, Barbara; his three children, Stefanie, Edward (Kim), and Michael (Theresa); his sister, Margaret (Bill); his brother, Charles (Alecia); sister-in-law, Virginia Hodge; eight grandchildren, Nikole (Josh), Robert (Brittany), Mitchell, Corbin, Lyndon, Elise, Madison and Tristan; two great grandchildren, Cameryn and Anthony; his nieces, Michelle (Shane) and Jesse (Tevin); his nephews, Billy, Ben (Amy), Travis, David, and Kristian (Virginia); his great nieces and nephew, Megan, Gloria and Henry; as well as his loving companion, Gunnie. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Walter T Conley American Legion Post 1107 for the MGYSGT Edward L.
